Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

This Privacy Policy applies to the mobile application Ultimate Offline Azores Map & Guide (the “App”) and this product microsite at saomiguelhub.com/azores-offline-map/.

The publisher and data controller for the App is São Miguel Hub (“we”, “us”). Contact for privacy questions and GDPR rights: info@sousadev.com.

This policy is specific to the App. Other São Miguel Hub / São Miguel Bus products may have separate notices (see saomiguelhub.com/privacy.html).

2. Summary

  • No account is required to use the App.
  • The current release does not include advertising, analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs.
  • Most of your personal content (saves, notes, custom pins, photos, trips) stays on your device.
  • Optional location and photo-library permissions are used only for features you choose.
  • When online, the App may request catalogue updates and São Miguel parish weather from the São Miguel Hub API. Those requests do not send your GPS coordinates, session ID, or account ID.
  • You may voluntarily disclose information by sending feedback email or using the system share sheet.

3. Data we process

3.1 Data stored only on your device

The App stores the following locally (SQLite and/or AsyncStorage / app documents), unless you choose to share it:

  • Downloaded place catalogue data and sync revision markers.
  • Settings and preferences (language, theme, map style, units, onboarding completion, upsell dismissal flags).
  • Saved places, personal notes, custom pin coordinates, categories, and optional local photo files.
  • Trips, day stops, completion checklists, day notes, and automatic local trip backup JSON files (backups exclude photos).
  • Cached weather responses and freshness timestamps for São Miguel parishes.

We do not operate a cloud account that receives a copy of this on-device content.

3.2 Precise location (optional)

If you grant location permission (onboarding, “show distances/location”, or when creating a custom pin from GPS), the App may read your current position to:

  • Show your position and accuracy on the map;
  • Compute straight-line distances to places;
  • Fill coordinates when you create a custom pin.

The live location fix is kept in memory for map/distance features and is not automatically persisted. Coordinates are written to local storage only when you create or edit a custom pin. Location is not included in automatic catalogue or weather API requests.

3.3 Photos (optional)

If you attach a photo to a custom pin, the App requests photo-library access, recompresses the selected image locally, and stores a copy under the app’s documents directory. Photos are not uploaded to our servers.

3.4 Network requests to São Miguel Hub

When your device is online, the App may call https://api.saomiguelhub.com (or another configured Hub API base) to:

  • Check for place-catalogue deltas (typically at most once per hour unless you force a sync), sending a revision marker and an island header;
  • Fetch parish weather for São Miguel;
  • Download trail-related files when URLs are returned by the catalogue sync and you need them locally.

Those app wrappers do not send GPS coordinates, account identifiers, or a dedicated analytics session ID. Like any HTTPS request, the hosting infrastructure may process technical metadata such as IP address, user-agent, and timestamps for security, delivery, and abuse prevention.

3.5 Information you send intentionally

  • Feedback / corrections: opening the mail composer or mailto may include the subject and message you type, category, source screen, app version, platform, and language, sent to info@sousadev.com.
  • Sharing: exporting trips, GPX, place/trail details, notes, or location via the OS share sheet discloses the content you choose to the destination app or service you select.
  • External links: opening websites, phone links, Apple Maps links, or São Miguel Hub / store listings leaves the App and is subject to those third parties’ policies.

3.6 This microsite

This static product site is hosted on GitHub Pages (custom domain saomiguelhub.com). Hosting and CDN providers may log IP addresses and request metadata. We do not run advertising cookies or analytics SDKs on these product pages. Language preference may be stored in your browser’s localStorage.

4. Purposes and legal bases (GDPR)

  • Provide the App (offline map, catalogue, trails, trips, settings): performance of a contract / your request to use the App.
  • Optional location and photos: your consent via the system permission prompts and your feature actions.
  • Catalogue / weather updates: legitimate interests in keeping content current and useful, and/or performance of the service you request.
  • Support email you send us: legitimate interests in responding to your request, and/or contract performance.
  • Security and legal compliance: legitimate interests and legal obligation.

5. Recipients and third parties

Depending on how you use the App, data may be processed by:

  • São Miguel Hub API hosting — catalogue sync and weather proxy.
  • Open-Meteo — weather forecasts requested via our API using fixed parish coordinates (not your live GPS); see Open-Meteo terms/privacy.
  • MapLibre — on-device map rendering (no MapLibre analytics account in the App).
  • Bundled map data providers — OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), Protomaps, and SRTM/public-domain elevation used for contours (shipped with the App; not a live telemetry channel to those projects).
  • Device mail and share clients — only when you initiate email or share.
  • Apple / Google — if you install from their stores; store processing is governed by Apple/Google.
  • GitHub Pages / hosting — for this microsite.

We do not sell your personal data.

6. International transfers

Infrastructure for the Hub API and static hosting may process technical request data outside Portugal / the EEA. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) or the provider’s applicable transfer mechanisms. Weather upstream (Open-Meteo) may involve processing outside your country; parish coordinates are fixed locations, not your personal GPS trail.

7. Retention

  • On-device content: retained until you delete it in the App or uninstall the App / clear app data. Uninstalling typically deletes local SQLite data, preferences, photos, and backups stored in the app sandbox.
  • Support emails: retained as long as needed to handle your request and for ordinary business/legal records.
  • Server logs: retained according to hosting security practices for a limited period.

Local trip backups are not a cloud restore service. Losing or resetting your device can permanently lose your notes, pins, photos, and trips unless you previously shared or exported them yourself.

8. Security

We use HTTPS for API and site traffic and keep personal content on-device by design. No method of electronic storage or transmission is perfectly secure. Protect your device with a passcode/biometrics and keep the OS updated.

9. Your rights

Under the GDPR (where applicable), you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability, and withdraw consent for optional permissions via system settings. Because most App content never leaves your device, the most effective way to erase it is to delete content in-app or uninstall the App.

10. Children

The App is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Contact us if you believe this has occurred.

11. What we do not do (current release)

  • No mandatory user accounts or social logins.
  • No in-app advertising network.
  • No analytics / attribution / crash SDK that profiles your usage in the background.
  • No microphone processing for App features (any unused OS permission declarations should be treated as non-functional and removed before store release).

12. Changes

We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date above shows the current version. Material changes may be highlighted on this page or in the App when appropriate.
